Emotional intelligence is a combination of two sets of skills: intrapersonal skills and interpersonal skills.
The first of these sets of skills includes the ability to know, understand, accept and manage oneself. The second one refers to the ability to work with different types of people. It is, therefore, about managing myself and my relationships with others.
Emotional Intelligence has become the main predictor of success in all industries, and job roles, well ahead of IQ and work experience.
There are two reasons why IQ is not a reliable predictor of success: although most occupations require a certain level of cognitive intelligence, beyond this level, cognitive intelligence has no impact on success or greater chance of career growth. The second reason is that many people with a high IQ lack the social skills and adaptability needed to fit in the circumstances required in most jobs; these skills eventually end up defining and conditioning most professional careers.
